It's Summer in Phoenix!

Ok. So we go through this every year here in the Valley of the Sun. When everybody else is sniveling about the snow in January, or March, or April, We are basking in some of the country's best weather, We do have to pay for it in the summertime when the mercury approaches the temperature of the planet it's named after. In honor of these intemperate climes, we are listing here some of our favorite "How hot is it?" jokes:

It's so hot, the birds have to use potholders to pull worms out of the ground.

It's so hot, farmers are feeding their chickens crushed ice to keep them from laying hard-boiled eggs.

It's so hot, you learn that a seat belt makes a pretty good branding iron.

It's so hot, I saw a dog chasing a cat, and they were both walking.

It's so hot, the cows are giving evaporated milk.

It's so hot, you can make instant sun tea.

It's so hot, you see lizards carrying a leaf to put under their tail when they sit down.

It's so hot, the bird feeders are clogged with puffed wheat and popped corn.

It's so hot, hot water now comes out of both taps.

It's so hot, you can attend any function in shorts and a tank top.

It's so hot, you can get sunburned through your car window.

It's so hot, parents are heard to say, "I wish it would rain - not so much for me, because I've seen it -- but for my 7-year-old."

It's so hot, the potatoes cook underground, and all you have to do to have lunch is to pull one out and add butter, salt and pepper.

It's so hot, you realize that asphalt has a liquid state.

It's so hot, I found a tick on a catfish.

It's so hot, I saw two trees fighting over the same dog.

It's so hot, you've experienced condensation on your butt from the hot water in the toilet bowl.

And so it goes!

Arizona Club Show June 5th!

Big news! The Arizona Club, our state's oldest social club approached me recently to do a show in their beautiful digs on the 37th and 38th floor of the Chase Tower. It is arguably the best view in the entire city, and the club has been around since the late 1800's. After meeting with Sharon Martin, the club manager, and walking both floors of the club, it was obvious the it would take a significant number of images to fill the space, and that many of the spaces would accommodate oversize images. The challenge was that there was a short lead time to mount the show. Fortunately, since we do all our own printing, stretching and framing in house, we decided that we could meet their deadline, a large event for the ASU School of Law. Our original goal was to have forty images installed and ready to go for their event. After delivering and installing the entire show, the club asked for ten more images! That was to be the real challenge, however, with several last minute trips to pick up additional supplies, some missed days off and overtime, the last ten images, plus two extra, were delivered and installed the day before the event. I can't exactly imagine what having a baby must be like, (no offense, moms) but there was quite a bit of panting at the end, much like a Lamaze delivery.

The show is up, and runs through the end of July. There will be an Artist's Reception to coincide with this upcoming First Friday on June 5th. The show comprises 52 pieces, many of which have never been seen before. You can preview it by checking the portfolio that I have up at my personal website, http://www.patkofahl.com. In addition, live music is going to be provided by a fabulous local jazz group, The New Metropolitan Ensemble. But wait, there's more! Executive Chef Ernst Springhorn will be whipping up some amazing hors d'oeuvres, and there will be happy hour drink specials to top it all off. Park in the Chase Tower Garage and take the underground tunnel to the lobby and the elevators, Ride the First Fridays Artlink Shuttle, or take the Light Rail. Plan on staying downtown for dinner, and check out the rest of the First Fridays art scene. See you there!

University Club Show March 12th

Exciting News! I am having a one man show at the University Club here in Phoenix! It's located on Monte Vista off Central Avenue, across the street (south) from the Heard Museum. The show is currently up and will run through the end of March 2009. The reception will be on Thursday, March 12th, from 5:30 'till 7:00 p.m. Please join us for hors d'oeuvres and a no-host bar. There are about 15 pieces in the show, which include new works. I am featuring florals, slot canyons and Monument Valley, in addition to images from Venice, as well as a new work from the Temple of the Golden Buddha in Shanghai. Its a great opportunity to try out the new Light Rail system if you haven't already taken a ride. Plus, there are lots of great restaurants downtown to sample after the event.
