My process is predominantly intuitive. I move pigment around on a surface until it conveys what I feel. There is no predetermined finish or elaborate planning. My paintings are expressions of my life experience, everything which has touched me and moved me along a path to the latest work. If a work does not speak visually, no amount of esoteric rhetoric here will change it.

Painting is a discipline which requires passion, devotion, focus and an undying spirit of pursuing something which will never be attained.

I was born in Phoenix, Arizona and have lived in the area all my life, except four years in Flagstaff at Northern Arizona University earning a degree in History and English Literature. My aunt, an artist and art instructor, inspired me when I had not yet started school. I have drawn and painted all my life, and live with the conviction “fear not” as I evolve in my work.

My art is represented in private, public and corporate collections, and I’ve shown in numerous local, national and international juried exhibitions including the National Watercolor Society, Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, International Society of Acrylic Painters, San Diego Watercolor Society International, Arizona Watercolor Association, Arizona Artists Guild, and Contemporary Watercolorists of Arizona. I’m a signature member of the National Watercolor Society, San Diego Watercolor Society, Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, Contemporary Watercolorists of Arizona and Arizona Watercolor Association. My work has been featured in American Artist Watercolor and Watercolor Artist. I enjoy teaching workshops, giving presentations and demonstrating my process.

“There’s a complex simplicity in Stan Kurth’s paintings that is both paradoxical and straightforward. As he works with multiple layers of watercolor and gesso, his provocative images emerge. Ambiguity and form coalesce into a singular, cohesive vision that holds the viewer spellbound.”
